About
Kevin Contento films fathers in Pahokee, Florida, for a year as they care for their children, challenging the absent Black father stereotype.
In Pahokee, Florida, Kevin Contento films fathers from his own circle of friends over the course of a year. Contento had recently become a parent himself. The men are seen picking up children from school, doing groceries, sweeping and mopping, organising children’s parties and handling laundry. Through these daily routines, the film challenges the stereotype that Black fathers are absent. Their dreams, feelings and thoughts also come up, and the men’s time together shows responsibility, solidarity and a hopeful view of their community. The film returns to a parable by the Sufi writer Farid ud-Din Attar, which suggests that a situation can only be understood from inside it. Shots of Pahokee and its rural surroundings are accompanied by music from hip-hop producer 4th Disciple.
