Cineville card: price, how it works and is it worth it? (for expats and visitors)

The Cinevillepas in the Netherlands costs €24 a month, or €19 up to and including age 29. You commit for 4 months and then cancel with one full calendar month's notice. It gets you into regular screenings at more than 80 film houses.

  • It pays for itself from 2 films a month against the average film-house ticket of €12.94, and from 2 under 30.
  • This is the Dutch pass; Belgium and other countries have their own Cineville passes.

Yes from two films a month: €24 against 2 × €12.94 = €25.88. Under 30, €19 against 2 × €9.69 = €19.38. At 4 films a month each ticket costs €6.00. If your local student ticket is €8.50, you need three visits to break even at €19.

Who is the Cineville card for?

It is for people who go to film houses at least twice a month, and for anyone under 30. It also covers almost all the specials: retrospectives, classics, summer programmes, many premieres and previews and selected festivals. Cineville members visit about 25 times a year on average, and 60% of the tickets at Cineville cinemas in 2024 were pass visits, according to Filmkrant.

It is not for you if your nearest cinema is a Pathé, Vue or Kinepolis, or if you go to the cinema about once a month.

How do I get a Cineville card?

Order on mijn.cineville.nl with your name, birth date and photo; the age on the pass decides your price. You pay the first month online (the page says iDeal / Wero): it is pro rata, the days left in the month divided by 30 times the monthly fee. A temporary PDF pass arrives by e-mail straight away and works at once; the physical pass follows in about two weeks. You then reserve through the cinema's own booking page or the Cineville app by entering your pass number, or simply turn up.

How do I cancel or pause Cineville?

After the 4-month minimum you cancel with at least one full calendar month's notice: cancel on 10 March and the pass ends on 30 April. Cancel on the website, by e-mail or by letter; Cineville's help page says the app cannot cancel, although the terms say "app or website". You have 14 days to withdraw if the pass has not been used.

There is no pause button. The workaround is to cancel and reactivate within 6 months: no admin fee, but a new 4-month minimum. After 6 months your data is deleted and you start a new membership. A pass bought with a gift voucher cannot be interrupted.

What does Cineville cost extra?

A cinema may charge what other visitors also pay extra for: 3D, 70mm, Dolby Atmos, very long films, marathons and live music. At Eye a film over 150 minutes adds €2.50 and 210 minutes or more €5. A paid surcharge is not refunded if you do not collect the ticket. Private screenings and some festivals and events are not included. A lost or damaged card costs €10 to replace.

Can I give Cineville as a gift?

Cineville sells digital vouchers for 4, 6 or 12 months: €76, €114 or €228 for someone up to and including 29, and €96, €144 or €288 from 30. The voucher is valid for two years and the pass stops by itself when the months are used. The recipient redeems it for a pass.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

  • How much does a Cineville card cost a month?

€24; €19 up to and including age 29. There is no yearly price: a 12-month gift voucher costs exactly 12 times the monthly rate.

  • Can I bring someone with my Cineville card?

Not on one pass: it is personal. You can book for other Cineville members, and in the same booking buy normal tickets for people without a pass. Some cinemas run one-off guest offers.

  • Does Cineville work at Pathé, Vue or Kinepolis?

No. Cineville works at film houses and independent cinemas. Pathé, Vue and Kinepolis have their own subscriptions.

  • Does Cineville work in Belgium?

The Dutch and the Belgian passes are separate products sold on separate sites, cineville.nl and cinevillepass.be; Cineville says a single cross-border pass is still a dream.

  • What if I lose my Cineville card?

Replacing a lost or damaged card costs €10. The app holds a digital pass that also works offline if you open it before you lose signal.

  • What happens if I reserve and do not come?

Cineville charges no fine. After two e-mail warnings it can switch off reserving for one to two weeks at a time, and if it keeps happening it can end the membership. You can cancel a reservation up to 30 minutes before the start.

  • Is there a student discount?

No separate student price: the only reduction is €19 up to and including age 29.

  • Is the first month free?

Not on Cineville's own pages. The order form has a step for a discount code and warns that a code can bring other conditions.

  • Can I go to a 16+ film with a parent?

No. By the Kijkwijzer rules a child under 16 cannot see a 16 or 18 film in a cinema, not even with a parent.

  • Can I give Cineville as a gift?

Yes, as a digital voucher for 4, 6 or 12 months, valid for 2 years: €76 for 4 months up to and including 29, €96 from 30. See gift cards.
