About

Wim Wenders’ 3D documentary follows the Tanztheater Wuppertal ensemble as it performs Pina Bausch’s choreography and recalls its late director.

Wim Wenders made Pina as a 3D dance film built around the Tanztheater Wuppertal, the company led by choreographer Pina Bausch, who died in summer 2009. The film presents passages from four Bausch works: Le Sacre du Printemps, Vollmond, Café Müller and Kontakthof. Dancers from the ensemble, among them Regina Advento, Malou Airaudo, Ruth Amarante, Jorge Puerta, Mechthild Großmann, Rainer Behr and Andrey Berezin, appear as themselves. Between these stage passages are solos and duets from other Bausch pieces, performed by company members at outdoor sites in Wuppertal, including places near the city’s Schwebebahn suspension railway. Members of the ensemble also recall Bausch, and the film includes archive footage of her.
