About

Patricio Guzmán links astronomers and archeologists in Chile's Atacama Desert with women searching for relatives killed under Pinochet's dictatorship.

Patricio Guzmán narrates this documentary from Chile's Atacama Desert, where the sky is so clear that astronomers from around the world gather to study the cosmos. Because the desert is extremely dry, it also preserves traces of the past, from remains of fish and mollusks to carvings and mummified humans, which archeologists study. Guzmán walks through the desert and recalls his childhood and his love of astronomy. Astronomer Gaspar Galaz explains how looking into space is also a way of looking back in time.

The same desert holds a darker part of Chile's history: a camp for political opponents of Augusto Pinochet's regime, and women searching for the remains of relatives who were killed during the dictatorship.
