About
Two sisters move with their father to a country house near their mother's hospital, where Mei meets the forest spirit Totoro.
In 1950s Japan, two sisters, Satsuki and Mei (voiced by Noriko Hidaka and Chika Sakamoto), move with their father, university professor Tatsuo Kusakabe (Shigesato Itoi), to an old house in the countryside. Their mother, Yasuko (Sumi Shimamoto), is in hospital for a long illness, and the house is close to it. The house also contains susuwatari, small dust-like spirits that leave once people move in. Mei follows two small spirits into the hollow of a large camphor tree and meets a bigger forest spirit, Totoro (Hitoshi Takagi), whose roars she hears as his name. She takes him for the troll in her illustrated book of Three Billy Goats Gruff. Mei falls asleep on Totoro; Satsuki later finds her on the ground, and Mei cannot show her family the tree.
