About

A Mexican boy who loves music despite his family’s ban is transported to the Land of the Dead, where he meets a trickster named Héctor.

In the Mexican town of Santa Cecilia, twelve-year-old Miguel Rivera (Anthony Gonzalez) loves music, even though his family has banned it for generations. The Rivera family makes shoes, and matriarch Mamá Imelda (Alanna Ubach) has kept music out of the home since her musician husband left. Miguel idolizes the late Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt) and teaches himself guitar by watching a documentary about him. On the Day of the Dead, he hopes to prove himself in a talent contest, which his family does not understand. After a mysterious chain of events, Miguel ends up in the colourful Land of the Dead. There he meets the charming trickster Héctor (Gael García Bernal), and the two set off on a journey to uncover the story behind Miguel’s family history.
