About
A 1929 silent experimental documentary follows a cameraman through Moscow, Kiev and Odessa as Soviet city life unfolds from dawn to evening.
Man with a Movie Camera is a silent experimental documentary from 1929. Dziga Vertov wrote and directed it; his brother Mikhail Kaufman did the camerawork and appears as the cameraman, while Yelizaveta Svilova edited. The film has no actors. It shows a day in late-1920s Soviet city life in Moscow, Kiev and Odessa, moving from early morning to evening. Residents are seen at work and at play, and in contact with the machinery of modern life. The cameraman moves through the city with his camera as the streets go from the quiet of dawn to the activity of day and evening. Without dialogue or a clear narrative, the film is built from movement, light and the rhythm of urban life.
