About
A purehearted farmhand in an isolated Italian estate befriends the marchioness's rebellious son, who draws him into a self-kidnapping plot.
Lazzaro (Adriano Tardiolo) is a good-natured, simple farmhand in a community of sharecroppers on an Italian tobacco estate called L'Inviolata. Isolated by a washed-out bridge, the peasants live in primitive circumstances and are kept in debt bondage to Marchioness Alfonsina De Luna. Lazzaro diligently follows the commands of the De Luna family and his fellow peasants. He forms an unlikely friendship with Tancredi (Luke Chikovani), the marchioness's rebellious son. Tancredi runs away with Lazzaro into the surrounding badlands as part of a self-kidnapping plot, and gives Lazzaro a broken slingshot. Lazzaro is deeply affected by Tancredi's overtures.
