About
Godfrey Reggio's non-narrative documentary sets images of American nature and city life to Philip Glass's music, without dialogue or narration.
Koyaanisqatsi is a non-narrative American documentary directed and produced by Godfrey Reggio, with music by Philip Glass and cinematography by Ron Fricke. Francis Ford Coppola presents the film. It has no dialogue, narration or intertitles and is assembled from stock footage, slow motion and time-lapse images of natural and urban environments across the United States. Its title comes from the Hopi language and is given as life out of balance, life in unrest, life in disintegration, or a way of life that asks for another way of living.
The film begins with rock paintings in the Great Gallery of Horseshoe Canyon and a rocket launch, with a low bass voice heard over the title. Desert formations and dunes in the American Southwest follow, along with time-lapse shadows, bats leaving a cave, moving clouds, a waterfall and slow-motion ocean waves.
