About

A documentary on three generations of a Newar family embodying the goddess Durgā in Bhaktapur’s Nava Durgā ritual and passing on its myth and knowledge.

Devagan is a documentary about the Nava Durgā ritual in Bhaktapur, Nepal. The term devagan refers to Newar men who embody the goddess Durgā in this ritual, a Hindu tradition of the Banmālā caste in the Kathmandu Valley that dates back to 1512. The film centres on three devagans from one family across three generations. The grandfather narrates the myth of Nava Durgā, and the performances of his son-in-law and grandson bring that myth to life. The documentary also shows the devagans’ daily lives, the work behind the scenes and the challenges the tradition faces. It looks at how myth, ritual knowledge and devotion are passed on within the family.
