About
A gay filmmaker in Hanoi films his conservative mother and neurodivergent sister after the sister becomes pregnant, revisiting family tensions through diaries and photos.
Baby Jackfruit Baby Guava is a documentary by Nông Nhật Quang, who appears as himself. His mother Cuc, his sister Mai and Quang form a family with sharply different views. Cuc is conservative; Mai, nine years older than Quang, is neurodivergent; Quang is gay and lives in Hanoi, while his relatives in Lào Cai province hold on to a more traditional way of life. His family is unaware of his American partner and of the clothes he wears in Hanoi's gay clubs. When Mai becomes pregnant, Quang starts filming his relatives. Diaries and family photos help the three look back at their shared past and at the strained bonds between them as they prepare for the baby.
