About
A Dutch documentary follows ten-year-old Nicoleta, granddaughter of a Roma king, growing up in a closed Kalderari community in Romania amid its traditions.
A Modern Roma Fairytale is a Dutch documentary by Raluca Lupaşcu. It follows ten-year-old Nicoleta, granddaughter of a Roma king, as she grows up in a closed Kalderari community in Romania.
Nicoleta is set to live, like her grandmother, mother and aunt, in a palace with glitter and gold. She will raise her children there and have a future husband who provides income outside the home. From Nicoleta's curious point of view, the film shows that this fairy tale also brings restrictions. She wonders how life looks for girls who may stay in school longer and do not marry at fourteen. While she still plays with Barbies, her mother Anca, 25, and aunt Regina, 15, deal with their roles in the patriarchal community. Regina looks forward to her future with her fiancé; Anca struggles under her commanding husband.
