How many people fit in Theater de Schalm?
The Grote Zaal seats 466 people on its tribune and the Lindenzaal 185. The theatre does not publish one building-wide total, and the two halls are not counted together for a performance.
- Grote Zaal
- 466 tribune seats; 470 seats being renewed in 2026
- Lindenzaal
- 185 seats
- Congress layout
- 420 seats with an extended stage
- Flat floor
- 200 chairs + 500 standing
- Building total
- Not published; the halls are counted separately
The Grote Zaal is the larger hall: 466 tribune seats for theatre, 420 in a congress layout with an extended stage, or a flat floor with 200 chairs and 500 standing places. The Lindenzaal has 185 tribune seats; with the floor flat it holds 200 standing visitors. For private events the rooms page quotes up to 460 visitors in the Grote Zaal and 180 in the Lindenzaal, with party layouts up to 600 and 200.
In 2026 the theatre is replacing 470 seats in the Grote Zaal; the room page counts 466 tribune seats and separate wheelchair places, and the capacity stays the same. Some theatre listings still quote 480 and 185; the official room pages, which give 466 and 185, are the basis here. Do not add the halls together: a performance uses one hall at a time.
For scale, the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven holds 36,500 people and the Jan Louwers Stadion 4,500. De Schalm is a mid-sized receiving theatre, not a stadium venue, and its largest single-room event layout is the Grote Zaal's 600 places in party layout.
| Hall or venue | Building | Capacity |
|---|---|---|
| Grote Zaal | Theater de Schalm, Meiveld 3, Veldhoven | 466 tribune seats; wheelchair places separate |
| Lindenzaal | Theater de Schalm, Meiveld 3, Veldhoven | 185 seats |
| Philips Stadion | Eindhoven | 36,500 |
| Jan Louwers Stadion | Eindhoven | 4,500 |
Seating plan: where to sit in the Grote Zaal and Lindenzaal
Both halls have a raked tribune. The Grote Zaal's step-free row is row 4 and the Lindenzaal's is row 1; those rows also hold the wheelchair places, so they are the best starting point for anyone who cannot manage steps.
Grote Zaal step-free
Row 4; wheelchair places at the corners
Lindenzaal step-free
Row 1; wheelchair places in the middle
Grote Zaal upper section
Row 13, lift + 1 step, extra legroom
New seats
470 being replaced from 26 Oct 2026, ~9% more legroom
In the Grote Zaal, row 4 is the accessible row: no steps, with the wheelchair places at its corners. Row 3 is one step down and row 5 one step up if row 4 is full. Row 13 is the first row of the bovenzaal (upper section); take the lift and then one step up into the row. Row 13 also has extra legroom.
In the Lindenzaal, row 1 is step-free and the middle of the row holds the wheelchair places. The corner seats in rows 2 and 3 are the alternative. The stairs at both sides of the Lindenzaal are steeper than those in the Grote Zaal.
The theatre is replacing the 470 seats in the Grote Zaal from 26 October 2026, with about 9% more legroom on average and the same capacity. The full PDF seat maps for both halls are linked from the theatre's Zaalplattegronden page; the box office can reserve a wheelchair place on 040 253 35 78.
Eating and drinking at Theater de Schalm
The foyer bar opens before the show and serves during the interval; after the performance you can stay at the bar or walk into restaurant D'n Burgemister, in the same building.
The in-house restaurant D'n Burgemister is open Tuesday to Sunday (the general FAQ still says Wednesday to Sunday; the separate eten-en-drinken page is more specific). It serves lunch and dinner before an evening show or after a matinee, with an extensive menu and a two-course Theatre Menu that gets you back to the hall in time. Reserve on 040 254 14 75 or [email protected].
The foyer bar is open before the performance and during the interval. After the show you can order at the foyer bar and/or in D'n Burgemister, whose entrance is in the foyer to the left of the lift. The theatre asks guests to pay contactless or by card at the bar where possible.
For a matinee, lunch before or after the show works well at D'n Burgemister; for an evening performance, dinner before. Because the restaurant is in the same building, you do not have to go outside between courses and curtain-up.

Accessibility at Theater de Schalm
The public areas are accessible, both halls have wheelchair places, and there is an accessible toilet. Book a wheelchair place through the box office on 040 253 35 78; it is not sold online.
The main entrance next to the town hall has a wheelchair entrance with a push button inside and outside; the threshold is 1 cm. In the Grote Zaal, row 4 is step-free and the corners hold the wheelchair places; row 3 is one step down and row 5 one step up. Row 13 is the first row of the upper section, reached by lift with one step up. In the Lindenzaal, row 1 is step-free with the wheelchair places in the middle; rows 2 and 3 are the alternative, and the side stairs are steeper.
There is an accessible toilet in the corridor left of entrance 2 (Grote Zaal). Hearing support (Audio Technica 3000) is available at every performance, with headphones or a link to a hearing aid. Selected shows have a sign-language interpreter, and the theatre works with Komt 't Zien for blind interpreters. Low-stimulus (prikkelarm) performances are marked in the programme.
For disabled parking there are 3 spaces at the Minneveld (permit required) and 4 in garage Geer (not free); the town-hall passage to Meiveld is open until 24:00. The main entrance has a 1 cm threshold, so allow a little extra time on a first visit.

Getting to Theater de Schalm by bus, train or car
The theatre is at Meiveld 3 in Veldhoven, next to the town hall. From Eindhoven Centraal, bus 402 or 14 stops at Heemweg/Centrum, a 4-minute walk; bus 15 stops at CityCentrum, about 5 minutes away.
Eindhoven Centraal is the main station for the theatre. Take bus 402 or 14 to Heemweg/Centrum and walk 260 m (4 min) along the Meiveld. Bus 15 stops at CityCentrum; the theatre says that is five minutes' walk, while the OSM foot router measures 690 m/10 min, so allow 5–10 minutes.
The nearest train station is Eindhoven Strijp-S, 5.3 km away and a 72-minute walk. Do not walk it with luggage: take the flex bus to Heuvelstraat, then walk 680 m (10 min) to the theatre.
By car, set the navigation to Geer 10, not Meiveld 3; the theatre's own directions use Geer 10. Park at garage Geer or the Repel car park, both within a few minutes' walk. The car parks are the practical destination; the theatre entrance is a short walk from both.
After a late performance, bus 402 is the public-transport fallback: the timetable valid from 28 October to 12 December 2026 has departures after midnight from Veldhoven Zonderwijk, with the last one at 01:36 on workdays, 01:37 on Saturday and 00:51 on Sunday. Heemweg/Centrum comes later on the route, so check the exact stop time in the planner; if the last bus has gone, take a taxi or rideshare from the entrance rather than relying on the Strijp-S train.

Parking at Theater de Schalm: Geer, Repel, Lei, Braak Noord and Bree
The theatre advises garage Geer or the Repel car park, both a few minutes' walk away. Evening parking is free after 18:00, except on Friday until 21:00; Sunday is free all day.
Garage Geer (Geer 60) is the closest: 60 m, 1 min walk. The entrance closes at 23:00, but you can leave 24/7. P1 lists daytime parking (Monday–Saturday 9:00–18:00) at €1.30 per hour with a maximum of €4 per day; after 18:00 it is free, except Friday until 21:00, and Sunday is free all day. Keep your ticket: you need it to open the theatre's access door, even when parking is free.
Repel (190 m, 3 min) and Bree (400 m, 6 min) are open-air car parks. A Repel day ticket costs €4; in the evening parking is free after 18:00, except Friday until 21:00, and free all day Sunday. Lei (200 m, 3 min) is free. The blue zone around the theatre gives the first two hours free with a parking disc.
Two more blue-zone car parks are within walking distance: Parkeerterrein Geer (Geer 10, 280 m/4 min) and Braak Noord (Braak 18, 390 m/6 min). P1 lists both as 24/7 blue-zone parking where the first two hours are free with a disc from Monday to Thursday and Saturday 09:00–18:00 and Friday 09:00–21:00. Outside those hours P1 says you may park longer than two hours, but it publishes no separate evening tariff, so the table gives the verified rule rather than an evening price.
For disabled parking there are 3 spaces at the Minneveld (permit required) and 4 in garage Geer (not free). The town-hall passage to Meiveld is open until 24:00. The theatre's directions name Repel and Geer as the best choices; Bree and Lei are useful fallbacks when those are full.

The history of Theater de Schalm
The theatre grew out of the Kunstkring De Schalm, founded in 1963, and opened in its current building on 29 September 1988 as part of Veldhoven's new Gemeentecentrum.
The Kunstkring 'De Schalm' was founded on 17 October 1963. The building at Meiveld 3 was designed by architectenbureau De Bever from Eindhoven, which brought theatre, restaurant, town hall and library under one roof in the Gemeentecentrum. Construction started on 26 September 1986; the theatre section cost about 7.6 million guilders.
When the centre opened on 29 September 1988, the Grote Zaal held 450 people and the small hall 150. In 1993 the foundation began professionalising, and in 1998 it was renamed Theater De Schalm. In 2011 the theatre's jubilee coincided with the 90th anniversary of the municipality of Veldhoven.
The building dates from 1988; in 2026 the theatre is replacing all 470 seats in the Grote Zaal, with about 9% more legroom and the same capacity. The original 450-seat Grote Zaal and 150-seat small hall now appear as the 466-seat Grote Zaal and 185-seat Lindenzaal in the current room pages.
