How many seats does Theater de Hofnar have?
The theatre hall is the main auditorium: 435 seats, 101 of them on the balcony.
That makes the Hofnar a mid-sized regional theatre: smaller than the main hall at Parktheater Eindhoven, larger than Ons Mierloos Theater in Mierlo.
The building opened in October 1999 and also houses a film house and, since 2026, the Centre for Music and Dance. The name comes from the cigar factory that stood on this site for almost a century.
| Venue | Room | Seats | Source |
|---|---|---|---|

Seating plan: stalls, balcony and choosing a seat
The hall has a stalls and a balcony; 101 of the 435 seats are upstairs.
When you book online you usually choose your own seat. The system releases the first rows before the later ones, refuses to leave a single empty seat, and opens the balcony later. If the seat you want is greyed out, that is why.
Wheelchair spaces are at the side of the stalls and on the balcony. They are limited and cannot be booked online: call (040) 207 40 10 or email [email protected] so the team can place you and seat your companion beside you.
Some shows are performed in club setting: the theatre seats are removed and replaced by tables and chairs, so the normal seat map does not apply.
- Stalls: closest to the stage, with the best view of faces and detail.
- Balcony: a full overview of the stage, reachable by lift.
- Latecomers who are admitted usually sit on the balcony.
- Need more room, a wheelchair space or seats together? Book by phone rather than online.
Your first visit: tickets, doors and what to bring

- Leave large bags and backpacks in the cloakroom; small handbags may go into the hall.
- No food or drink in the theatre hall. For films, drinks and snacks are allowed, but not your own.
- No photos or recordings during the performance; before and after is fine.
Food and drink at Het Duisenburgh Theatercafé
The café is the meeting place in the building, for coffee, a drink before the show and interval drinks.
- Open weekdays from 09:00; in the evening and at weekends it opens one hour before the performance or film.
- Coffee, tea, beer and wine; there are quiet seats at the back for a break or some work.
- No food or drink in the theatre hall. In the film hall, drinks and snacks are allowed, but you cannot bring your own.

From cigar factory to cultural centre
The Hofnar takes its name from the cigar factory that stood on this spot for almost a century. Its founders saw Rigoletto in Brussels around 1919 and named their cigars after the jester, the hofnar.
The theatre opened in October 1999, with a theatre, a music school and the library under one roof. It has since grown into a theatre, film house and arts centre.
From 2026 the theatre and the Centre for Music and Dance continue under one name, in one building. More than 150 performances a season bring cabaret, theatre, music, musical, dance and youth shows to Valkenswaard.
