About
At a Swiss Alps spa, retired composer Fred Ballinger and film director Mick Boyle holiday; Fred declines a royal invitation.
Fred Ballinger (Michael Caine), a retired composer, and Mick Boyle (Harvey Keitel), a film director, are old friends on holiday at a luxury spa in the Swiss Alps, in Flims. Fred is there with his daughter Lena (Rachel Weisz). An emissary for Queen Elizabeth II offers Fred a knighthood and asks him to perform at a concert for Prince Philip's birthday; Fred declines, though he still composes pieces in his head when alone. Mick is working with a group of writers on the screenplay for what he calls his testament, for his muse Brenda Morel (Jane Fonda). Actor Jimmy Tree (Paul Dano), also at the hotel, is preparing for a role and is frustrated that audiences remember him mainly as a robot.
