About
Fourteen-year-old Qihuo and her two best friends walk through remote Chinese mountains to buy a skirt for her coming-of-age ceremony.
Fourteen-year-old Qihuo lives in a remote mountain region of southern China. She tells her two best friends a secret: she has just had her first period. In her family that means she will receive a ceremonial skirt for the traditional Changing Skirt ceremony, which marks the end of childhood and brings expectations of marriage and work. Her mother works as a migrant labourer in the city, far from home. The three girls decide to buy a skirt themselves, on the other side of the mountains. Their long walk takes them through rugged terrain, away from the adult world. Along the way they meet various figures and swap myths and ghost stories, while talking about their future.
