Swedish farmhand Karl-Göran Persson (Denis Lavant) is captivated by invasion threats during the Cold War and turns his farm into a scrap-metal fortress.

During the Cold War, Swedish farmhand Karl-Göran Persson, played by Denis Lavant, is affected by the images in the pamphlet Om kriget kommer (If War Comes) and begins fortifying his house. In the south of Sweden he uses scrap metal, bicycle wheels, iron wire, rails, empty paint cans and chicken wire to turn his farm into a self-built fortress of scrap metal and cement, meant as a refuge for himself and his neighbours if the bomb falls. The community watches with wonder and incomprehension. As the work continues, the threat of future destruction and reality become intertwined, and the construction becomes an obsession for the lonely Karl-Göran.
