About

A Chilean documentary follows Venezuelan migrants heading to Chile and the tensions, corruption and protests they meet along the way.

Unwelcomed is a Chilean documentary by Amílcar Infante and Sebastián González Méndez about Venezuelan migration toward Chile. From 2019, large numbers of Venezuelans left their country heading west. At the Cúcuta crossing, according to the film, migrants had to pay bribes to corrupt police. Carrying only essentials, they continued toward Chile, where the president had promised asylum. The film begins in 2021, when the refugee crisis was at its height. It moves between images of people living in severe hardship and views of the wide, harsh Andean landscape. Many are stuck at the Bolivian border in an improvised camp. At Colchane, on Chile's border with Bolivia, they encounter corruption and local anger. It also examines the tensions around migration and a major anti-immigrant protest in Chile in late 2021.
