About
In 1937, a young Soviet prosecutor suspects NKVD corruption and insists on meeting an imprisoned Old Bolshevik, Stepniak.
In 1937, during Stalin's Great Terror, Kornev (Aleksandr Kuznetsov) is a young prosecutor newly posted to the Soviet Union's local prosecutor's office. A letter from a prisoner in Bryansk reaches him, and he begins to suspect that the Secret Police is involved in corruption. Using his oversight role, he arranges a prison visit. The director offers excuses, but Kornev insists on seeing Stepniak (Aleksandr Filippenko), an imprisoned Old Bolshevik and local party veteran. Sergei Loznitsa wrote and directed the film, which is based on a novella by Georgy Demidov.
