About

A French documentary about a one-class primary school in a small village, where teacher Georges Lopez guides pupils of different ages through a school year.

To Be and to Have follows a single school year at a small primary school in Saint-Étienne-sur-Usson, a commune in Puy-de-Dôme, France, with just over 200 inhabitants. In one classroom, children of different ages — from the youngest pupils to the final year of primary school — are taught together by one teacher, Georges Lopez.

Nicolas Philibert's documentary stays with that class through the year and shows Lopez at work with his pupils, who appear as themselves: among them Johan, Alizé, Guillaume, Létitia, Jonathan and Olivier. The film's title refers to the two auxiliary verbs of the French language.
