About
A fading Hollywood star, fired because of her age, uses a black-market substance that creates a younger version of herself.
Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) is a fading Hollywood star and former actress and dancer who has long hosted the aerobics TV show Sparkle Your Life. On her fiftieth birthday, the network boss Harvey (Dennis Quaid) fires her because of her age. Shortly afterwards, distracted by a billboard of herself being taken down, she crashes her car. In hospital, a young male nurse gives her a USB stick advertising The Substance, a black-market serum that promises a younger, more beautiful and more perfect version of the user, with both bodies remaining connected. Elisabeth orders the substance and injects it. Margaret Qualley plays Sue, the younger woman created by the process.
