The Siege of Paradise is a documentary directed by Gar O'Rourke. It is set in Cinque Terre on Italy's Ligurian coast, where five villages receive millions of tourists each year and a few thousand people live. An Irish film crew spent a season there to see what mass tourism does to the area. The film follows a restaurant owner, a winegrower, a philosophical fisherman, a frustrated mayor and an American influencer, among others.
Their stories unfold during one season. The film also shows the strain on the villages: infrastructure under pressure, waste bins that overflow and young people who cannot afford a home in their own village. Each person looks for a balance between economic interests and livability.
