About

In British India, a teenage girl's first love stirs when an American captain visits her family home by the Ganges.

In British India, English teenager Harriet (Patricia Walters) lives with her family beside the Ganges. Her father (Esmond Knight) manages a jute mill, and her mother is played by Nora Swinburne. Harriet has four sisters and one brother, all younger than she is. Their neighbour Mr John (Arthur Shields) asks his younger American cousin, Captain John (Thomas E. Breen), to come and stay. The children learn that the captain uses a prosthetic leg after a war injury. His arrival draws the attention of Harriet, her sisters and Harriet's somewhat older friend Valerie (Adrienne Corri).
