About
Mr. Miyagi helps angry teenager Julie Pierce through karate after meeting her grandmother at a veterans' memorial.
At a memorial ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery for Japanese-American soldiers of World War II, Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) meets Louisa Pierce (Constance Towers), the widow of his former commanding officer. At her home in Boston he is introduced to her granddaughter Julie (Hilary Swank), a teenager who struggles with anger after her parents died in a car crash and who clashes with her grandmother, classmates and teachers. At Julie's school, an older male group called the Alpha Elite, led by the brutal trainer Colonel Dugan (Michael Ironside), is feared as a gang; Eric McGowan (Chris Conrad) is the exception, joining only for career prospects. Miyagi offers Louisa his help and begins teaching Julie karate.
