About
In bombed-out Berlin in 1945, a concentration camp survivor finds a traumatized former military surgeon living in her apartment.
In 1945, in bombed-out Berlin, the photographer and illustrator Susanne Wallner returns from a concentration camp. In her old apartment she finds Dr. Hans Mertens, a former military surgeon, living there. With broken windows and few possessions, the flat allows only a sparse life, and the two become reluctant roommates. Hans is haunted by war memories and drinks heavily; he meets the people around him with sarcasm. Susanne tries to arrange herself with the situation, while Hans is not ready to do so and drinks regularly. Friendship develops slowly between them. Hildegard Knef plays Susanne Wallner; Wilhelm Borchert plays Dr. Hans Mertens.
