About

Sam Pollard's documentary traces the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis, run by Walter and Loree Bailey as a Black-owned business for travelers and musicians.

The Lorraine is a documentary by Sam Pollard about the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee. Walter and Loree Bailey owned the hotel, which the film describes as a thriving center of Black entrepreneurship and a destination for musicians of the twentieth century. Civil Rights demonstrations were planned there, and Black and white artists created history together at the hotel. As a rare Black-owned establishment during the Jim Crow era, the Lorraine was a safe haven and sanctuary for Black travelers. Pollard draws on archival footage and music, and on the voices of people who lived through the period.
