About
In Berlin, an aging Hotel Atlantic doorman (Emil Jannings) is demoted to washroom attendant and tries to hide his demotion from those around him.
In Berlin at the beginning of the twentieth century, an aging doorman (Emil Jannings) works at the Hotel Atlantic. In his splendid uniform he greets guests at the revolving door and takes pride in his position, which earns him respect in his neighbourhood. When he has trouble handling a heavy suitcase and suffers a moment of weakness, the hotel manager (Hans Unterkircher) decides that he is too old and feeble to represent the hotel. He is moved from the door to a post in the men's washroom. The demotion is a humiliation for him, and he tries to keep it from his family and neighbours, who know him only as the hotel's proud doorman.
