About

The teenage children of two mothers seek the sperm donor who fathered them; when the mothers learn of it, they invite him to dinner.

Lisa Cholodenko's comedy drama The Kids Are All Right follows Nic (Annette Bening) and Jules (Julianne Moore), a married couple who live in the Los Angeles region. Nic works as an obstetrician, and Jules, a housewife, is beginning a business in landscape design. Both women have a child from the same sperm donor. Their fifteen-year-old son Laser (Josh Hutcherson) wants to know who his biological father is. Since he is too young to make the request, he asks his eighteen-year-old sister Joni (Mia Wasikowska) to approach the sperm bank. The bank gives them the name and contact details of Paul Hatfield (Mark Ruffalo), who owns a restaurant. Joni and Laser meet Paul and keep this from their mothers. When Nic and Jules learn about it, they invite Paul to dinner.
