About

King Arthur's nephew Gawain accepts a Christmas challenge from a green-skinned stranger, beginning a quest to prove his courage.

The Green Knight is a dark fantasy adventure adapted from the 14th-century poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Dev Patel plays Gawain, King Arthur's headstrong nephew, who is seen on Christmas morning with Essel (Alicia Vikander), a commoner and his lover. At court, his uncle the King (Sean Harris) is present when a huge green-skinned stranger arrives during the celebrations. The visitor proposes a contest: a knight may strike him and win his green axe, but must then come to the Green Chapel the following Christmas to accept a comparable blow. Gawain accepts.

His mother (Sarita Choudhury) has performed a magic rite that summoned the stranger, and the encounter sets Gawain on a journey meant to test his courage.
