About

New York narcotics detectives Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle and Buddy Russo pursue a wealthy French heroin smuggler whose shipment is headed for the city.

In New York, narcotics detectives Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle (Gene Hackman) and Buddy “Cloudy” Russo (Roy Scheider) are on the trail of Alain Charnier (Fernando Rey), a wealthy French heroin smuggler. Charnier intends to bring a large heroin shipment into the United States hidden in the car of his unsuspecting friend Henri Devereaux (Frédéric de Pasquale), a television personality travelling to New York by ship.

The detectives stake out a Brooklyn bar known for drug trafficking, with Doyle dressed as Santa Claus, and later observe Salvatore “Sal” Boca (Tony Lo Bianco) and his wife Angie entertaining mobsters at the Copacabana. They tail the couple and connect the Bocas to Joel Weinstock, a financier in the narcotics underworld. Doyle then learns that a heroin shipment will soon arrive.
