About

A dressmaker returns to her small Australian hometown to care for her mother, right past wrongs and change the town's fashion with her creations.

In 1951, Myrtle “Tilly” Dunnage (Kate Winslet) returns to Dungatar, the small Australian town in Victoria where she was sent away as a child. Now a trained dressmaker, she comes back to care for her mother, Molly Dunnage (Judy Davis), who lives in squalor and does not remember her, and to right wrongs from her past. Tilly remembers little of the events that led to her exile. With her sewing machine and couture skills, she begins making clothes for the townswomen, who are soon enthusiastic about her creations. She also takes a liking to Teddy McSwiney (Liam Hemsworth). At the local football final, her red dress distracts the Dungatar players; Teddy points this out, and Tilly changes into a black outfit before the last quarter. Hugo Weaving plays Sergeant Farrat.
