About
A Romanian immigrant works as a housekeeper for a wealthy family in Bordeaux while rehearsing the role of a chambermaid with a theatre company.
The Diary of a Chambermaid is a French-language drama directed by Radu Jude, loosely based on Octave Mirbeau's novel of the same name. Gianina, a young Romanian immigrant played by Ana Dumitrașcu, is hired by the wealthy Donnadieu family in Bordeaux as cook, housekeeper and nanny. At work she looks after Louen, the young son of her employers, played by Louen Bouteiller. In the evenings she rehearses with a theatre company, taking the role of a chambermaid in an adaptation of Mirbeau's The Diary of a Chambermaid. Mélanie Thierry and Vincent Macaigne play Marguerite and Pierre Donnadieu. Her own daughter is growing up without her in Romania.
