About
In 1920s Copenhagen, Gerda Wegener asks her husband Einar to pose as a female model, setting him on the path to becoming Lili Elbe.
In early 1920s Copenhagen, Gerda Wegener (Alicia Vikander) is a portrait artist, while her husband Einar Wegener (Eddie Redmayne) is a landscape painter and illustrator. When one of Gerda's female models cannot attend, she asks Einar to stand in and pose for a painting. The experience of wearing women's clothes and posing brings out a side of Einar that had remained hidden. The couple's friend Ulla (Amber Heard) gives him the name Lili. Gerda goes on to paint further portraits of her husband in women's clothing. The film is based on David Ebershoff's novel of the same name and loosely inspired by the lives of the Danish painters Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener.
