About

A Javanese girl is lured with false promises to a Dutch colonial rubber plantation on Sumatra, where migrant workers are treated as slaves.

In the early twentieth century, a Javanese girl is lured to a Dutch colonial rubber plantation on the neighbouring island of Sumatra with false promises of a better life. She soon finds herself among migrant labourers in a colonial rubber plantation. The promises prove false. Around the plantation, old-growth forest is being cut down to make way for rows of rubber trees. Dutch colonists treat the migrant workers as slaves. The girl sees how the forest is cleared and how the migrant workers are treated on the plantation.
