About
A Cape Verdean filmmaker films his mother as she starts living alone after more than forty years of marriage and sorts through her belongings.
In this Portuguese documentary, filmmaker Fábio Silva, who has Cape Verdean roots, turns his camera on his mother. A Cape Verdean woman in her sixties, she is living alone for the first time after more than forty years of marriage. Silva films her in the home she now occupies by herself as she sorts through her belongings. He asks her questions, including about her half-siblings, and guides her during the filming. Old photographs and objects that belonged to his father bring up stories about the dynamics of his parents’ marriage, Cape Verdean norms around relationships, living as a Cape Verdean in Portugal, and his own relationship with his parents. Unlike his mother, he has warm memories of his father.
