About

A personal documentary essay by Yuula Benivolski about her childhood in Shlomi, an Israeli town built on the Palestinian village of Al-Bassa.

The Black Box Is Orange is a personal documentary essay by director Yuula Benivolski about her childhood in Shlomi, an Israeli town on the northern border with Lebanon. Shlomi was built on the site of the Palestinian village of Al-Bassa. Using her own recollections and fragmentary archives, Benivolski looks back at her immersion in Zionist ideology as a child and at her later opposition to it. The film also examines the village's history after the Nakba of 1948, when Palestinians were displaced and people from the newly founded state of Israel settled there, and what was destroyed, including Palestinian archives. In ten chapters, with personal archive material and 16mm footage, she traces the area from before the Second World War through the Nakba and the First Gulf War to the present.
