About
A portrait of DEFA director and painter Jürgen Böttcher, alias Strawalde, who recalls his life in the GDR and his painting career.
Johannes Blume's documentary Strawalde – Ein Leben in Bildern follows the DEFA director and painter Jürgen Böttcher, known as Strawalde. Jürgen Böttcher appears as himself; Katharina Thalbach narrates. Born in Frankenberg/Sachsen on 8 July 1931, Böttcher looks back on a life shaped by his childhood in Nazi Germany, his work and conflicts as a filmmaker in the GDR under the SED, and the opening of the Wall. He speaks personally about never wanting to leave the GDR and never wanting to break with it, despite the reprisals. The portrait also follows Strawalde as a painter, including the recognition his work found after the Wall came down.
