About

In 1938 Salzburg, a young woman preparing to become a nun becomes governess to the seven children of a strict widowed naval captain.

Julie Andrews plays Maria, a young woman at Nonnberg Abbey in Salzburg in 1938 who is preparing to become a nun. Her high spirits cause concern, so the Mother Abbess sends her to work as governess for the seven children of retired naval officer Captain Georg von Trapp (Christopher Plummer). The widowed captain keeps the household under strict military discipline, and the children have already driven away several governesses with their tricks. Maria meets them with patience and kindness, and they start to trust her. While the captain is in Vienna, she sews play clothes for them from curtains. The cast also includes Eleanor Parker as The Baroness, Charmian Carr as Liesl, Nicholas Hammond as Friedrich, Heather Menzies as Louisa, Angela Cartwright as Brigitta and Debbie Turner as Marta.
