About
A struggling minor-league hockey team in a Pennsylvania steel town turns to violent play and the Hanson Brothers to draw fans.
In the fictional Rust Belt city of Charlestown, Pennsylvania, the planned closure of the steel mill and the layoffs it will bring hang over the town's minor league ice hockey team. The Charlestown Chiefs are having a losing season, with incompetent players and increasingly hostile spectators. Player-coach Reggie Dunlop (Paul Newman) and most of his teammates have no employment prospects outside hockey. To save money, the team's manager, Joe McGrath (Strother Martin), signs the young, immature Hanson Brothers. When Charlestown fans respond positively to violence, Dunlop lets the Hansons loose, and their violent play and on-ice brawling become the team's way of drawing attention. Michael Ontkean plays Ned Braden.
