About

A ginkgo tree in Marburg links three stories from 1908, 1972 and 2020 about a female student, a student and a neuroscientist.

In Marburg, an old ginkgo tree stands in the university's botanical garden. Around it, the film follows three lives in different eras.

In 1908, Grete (Luna Wedler) applies to become one of the first female students at Marburg University. During her entrance examination, professors try to humiliate her with suggestive questions about Linnaeus's classification of plants, but she answers them. Overwhelmed, she flees to the botanical garden. Thomas (Johannes Hegemann) finds her there and tells her she was the only woman accepted.

In 1972, student Hannes (Enzo Brumm) experiences a profound change through observing a geranium and connecting with it. In 2020, Tony (Tony Leung Chiu-wai), a neuroscientist from Hong Kong with a guest professorship in Marburg, is stuck in deserted university housing during the corona lockdowns and sets up an experiment with the tree.
