About

Al Pacino plays a New York police officer who refuses to take bribes and reports corruption, while his colleagues turn against him.

Al Pacino plays Frank Serpico, a New York City police officer who will not accept a share of the money his colleagues regularly take from local criminals. John Randolph appears as Chief Sidney Green. His colleagues avoid working with him, and he is in constant danger of being placed in life-threatening situations by his partners.

Serpico graduates from the police academy in 1960 with ideas for improving the force's relations with the community. He wears civilian clothes rather than the department's recognizable plainclothes. During a chase after a burglar, other officers do not recognize him and shoot at him; he survives and sees that departing from protocol can be dangerous. In 1967 he reports an attempted bribe to a high-ranking investigator, who laughs and advises him to keep the money. Serpico learns that corruption is widespread in the department.
