In 1987 Los Angeles, housewife Carol White develops a mysterious illness that she believes is caused by chemicals in her environment.

Set in Los Angeles in 1987, Safe follows Carol White, played by Julianne Moore, a housewife in an affluent suburb. She lives with her husband Greg, played by Xander Berkeley, and her stepson Rory. Her days are filled with gardening, aerobics and meetings with friends. After the family's home is renovated, Carol begins to experience physical symptoms in ordinary situations: she coughs when exposed to truck exhaust, has a panic attack at a baby shower and suffers a nosebleed during a perm. As the symptoms worsen, she becomes convinced that exposure to chemicals is triggering them. Doctors cannot diagnose or treat her and say she is physically healthy.
