About
Aspiring mime Marcel Marceau helps Jewish orphans and later joins the French Resistance during World War II.
Resistance is a 2020 biographical drama directed by Jonathan Jakubowicz and inspired by the life of Marcel Marceau. In Strasbourg in 1939, Marcel (Jesse Eisenberg) works in his father's butcher shop but is drawn to painting and mime. He performs Charlie Chaplin impressions at a local cabaret and admires Emma (Clémence Poésy). His cousin Georges (Géza Röhrig) is involved with Jews preparing for a possible German invasion. Through Georges, Marcel comes into contact with Jewish children who have been brought out of Germany; the traumatized children respond well to his pantomime. France is occupied by German forces, and Marcel's older brother Alain (Félix Moati) is active in the French Resistance. Marcel later joins the Resistance as well.
