About
In Coney Island, a lonely widow prepares for a TV appearance while her heroin-addicted son and his friends chase their dreams.
Darren Aronofsky’s adaptation of Hubert Selby Jr.’s 1978 novel is set in Brighton Beach, New York City. The widowed Sara Goldfarb (Ellen Burstyn) lives there alone and spends her time watching television. Her son Harry Goldfarb (Jared Leto) and his friend Tyrone C. Love (Marlon Wayans) are heroin addicts who deal heroin to finance their dreams. Harry and his girlfriend Marion Silver (Jennifer Connelly) plan to open a clothing store for Marion’s designs, while Tyrone hopes for his mother’s approval and a way out of the ghetto. When Sara receives an invitation to appear on her favourite game show, she begins a strict crash diet to fit into a red dress she wore at Harry’s graduation. On the advice of her friend Rae, she visits a doctor who prescribes amphetamines to control her appetite.
