About
Brazilian families search a mass grave and forensic lab for relatives killed under the dictatorship, while home movies revive the dead.
Regarding Memory and Neglect is a documentary by Ricardo Martensen set in Brazil. It follows bereaved families from different periods as they look for the remains of relatives and for clarity about how those relatives died. In old home movies, the dead appear again on screen.
The film also shows a mass grave, from which bags of remains are recovered one after another. In a forensic laboratory, specialists examine the bones to establish who the person was: someone killed decades earlier under the dictatorship that lasted from 1964 to 1985 and who is still missing. For the relatives, that person has also remained absent. The authorities, even after many years, prefer to keep the facts out of sight.
