In Warren Beatty’s Reds, journalist John Reed navigates radical politics and his relationship with Louise Bryant.

Warren Beatty co-wrote, produced and directed Reds, a 1981 historical drama about journalist and writer John Reed, played by Beatty. The story begins in 1915, when Louise Bryant (Diane Keaton), a married journalist and suffragist, sees radical journalist John Reed speak at a lecture in Portland, Oregon. After an interview with him about international politics lasts all night, she joins Reed in New York’s Greenwich Village, where she meets activists and artists including Emma Goldman (Maureen Stapleton) and playwright Eugene O’Neill (Jack Nicholson). Reed and Bryant later move to Provincetown, Massachusetts, to focus on writing and become involved in the local theater scene.
