About
A young companion in Monte Carlo marries the aristocratic widower Maxim de Winter and arrives at his Cornwall estate, where his first wife's memory dominates.
A young, unnamed woman works as a paid companion to the elderly Mrs. Van Hopper and is staying with her in Monte Carlo. There she meets Maxim de Winter, an aristocratic widower still marked by the death of his first wife, Rebecca. Maxim and the young woman spend time together, and he unexpectedly asks her to marry him. After their honeymoon they go to his large estate, Manderley, in Cornwall. The household remains devoted to Rebecca, and the housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers, makes clear to the new Mrs. de Winter that she cannot take Rebecca's place. Laurence Olivier plays Maxim de Winter, Joan Fontaine the young woman, and Judith Anderson Mrs. Danvers.
