About

Ran, Akira Kurosawa's historical drama inspired by King Lear, follows an ageing warlord who divides his realm among his three sons in sixteenth-century Japan.

Set in sixteenth-century Japan, Ran is Akira Kurosawa's 1985 historical drama, inspired by Shakespeare's King Lear and legends of the daimyo Mōri Motonari. Tatsuya Nakadai plays Lord Hidetora Ichimonji, an ageing warlord who decides to divide his domain among his three sons. The eldest, Taro Takatora Ichimonji (Akira Terao), is to take the First Castle and lead the Ichimonji clan, while Hidetora keeps the title of Great Lord. Jiro Masatora Ichimonji (Jinpachi Nezu) and Saburo Naotora Ichimonji (Daisuke Ryū) receive the Second and Third Castles and are to support Taro. Saburo criticises his father's lecture on unity and is exiled. Taro's wife, Lady Kaede (Mieko Harada), urges Taro to take full control of the clan.
