About
On the run with embezzled cash, real estate secretary Marion Crane stops at a secluded motel run by Norman Bates and his mother.
In Phoenix, Arizona, real estate secretary Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) embezzles $40,000 from her employer after her boyfriend Sam Loomis (John Gavin) says his debts are delaying their marriage. She drives toward Sam's home in Fairvale, California, switches cars in Bakersfield after an encounter with a suspicious policeman and is forced by a rainstorm to stop at the secluded Bates Motel. The proprietor, Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins), registers her under an alias and invites her to dinner. When he returns to his house to fetch the food, Marion overhears him arguing with his mother about his wish to dine with her. Afterwards he talks about his work as a taxidermist, his mother's illness and people being caught in private traps they cannot escape.
