About
Astronauts crash on an unknown planet where apes are the dominant species and humans are mute primitives.
Franklin J. Schaffner’s Planet of the Apes begins with a space voyage. Astronauts Taylor, Landon and Dodge awaken from hibernation after their craft crashes into a lake on an unknown planet. Taylor, the mission commander played by Charlton Heston, reads the ship’s chronometer as the year 3978, roughly two millennia after their 1972 departure. The planet first appears desolate. Travelling through a wasteland, the men come upon an oasis inhabited by primitive, mute humans. The ape society has evolved human-like intelligence and speech, with apes as the dominant species and humans as mute primitives in animal skins. Roddy McDowall plays Cornelius, Kim Hunter is Zira, Maurice Evans is Dr. Zaius, Robert Gunner is Landon and Linda Harrison is Nova.
